What has you bent out of Shape?

A Woman with a Disabling Spirit

10 Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath.

11 And behold, there was a woman who had had a disabling spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not fully straighten herself.

12 When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your disability.”

13 And he laid his hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and she glorified God.

14 But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the people, “There are six days in which work ought to be done. Come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.”

15 Then the Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger and lead it away to water it?

16 And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?”

17 As he said these things, all his adversaries were put to shame, and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him. Luke 13:10-17

God first Command

Moses first taught many centuries after creation. It is first mentioned in Exodus 16:23, where Moses explains to the Israelites in the wilderness that on the sixth day of the week they are to gather and prepare enough manna for two days instead of the customary one.

Later, however, the Sabbath was explicitly codified in the Mosaic Law, “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates.” (Ex. 20:9-10)  The keeping of the Sabbath was a sacred sign between God and Israel, a day “holy to the Lord” (Ex. 31:12-17) and violation became punishable by death (Ex. 35:2).

When a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath contrary to the Lord’s command, he was stoned to death by the community (Num. 15:32-36). Thus it was clear from the very beginning that this day of rest was not to be taken lightly.

As traditions developed among the Jews, they were gradually incorporated into the general Sabbath procedure. Departing from the simplicity of the Torah, the Jewish people added rabbinical procedure.

Departing from the simplicity of the Torah, the Jewish people added rabbinical strictures and ceremonies to the Sabbath until it reached its present complex and demanding form.

Shabbath/ Synagogue

Saturday begins with the morning synagogue service, which lasts about three hours.  After the Torah reading and the recitation of prayers has concluded, the Jewish people greet one another.

And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.””

god-has-the-final-sayPoint #3 Don’t worry about what people say God has the final say!

We dont know what people are going through but God does. We can’t heal them but the power of God can! And all we have to do is stay focused on trying to walk as straight as we possibly.

God really can straighten us out. Just that the woman of God did in this story we have to GLORIFY GOD!

Not only that… God will fight our battles. He is our vindicator.

15 Then the Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger and lead it away to water it?

God never called out anything that the woman did wrong because she was in a humble posture of submission and reverence to Jesus. The Leaders of the church were too busy trying to tell God how to be God.

16 And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?”

Jesus was her representative. He advocated for her. Not against her!

17 As he said these things, all his adversaries were put to shame, and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him.

Jesus fought the battle for her and her enemies were put to shame. She was healed and all of God’s people rejoiced.
